Arsenal have contacted Real Madrid over a deal to bring Norwegian midfielder Martin Odegaard to Emirates Stadium on loan.
Real cut Odegaard on loan at Real Sociedad to bring him back to the club last summer, but he has managed just nine appearances in all competitions this season, including only one La Liga debut since September.
It is understood that Odegaard has asked to leave Real once again this month, and according to Sky Sports News, Arsenal have made contact to try to strike a deal.
Thanks to the emergence of Emile Smith Rowe, the Gunners are no longer as desperate to recruit a creative midfielder as they once were, but they still want someone to come and help the 20-year-old take on the burden.
This has seen Arsenal turn to Odegaard, and Athletic add that they are considered one of the best contenders to sign the Norway international. The two sides already have an open line of communication from Dani Ceballos’ stay in London, and Arsenal hope to take advantage of it.
Real boss Zinedine Zidane has already approved Odegaard’s request to leave, and it is believed the decision will be left to the player himself.
In the Spanish press, Arsenal does not receive much attention. Instead, the belief is that he will choose to stay in La Liga, with a handful of teams pushing to land the player who was once considered the most exciting young midfielder on the planet.
Deportes Cuatro believes Sevilla wins the race on his signing, but Marca adds that Sociedad have intensified their interest in recent hours and appear to be making real progress on a deal.
Sociedad is believed to be Odegaard’s favorite destination as he knows the club well. During his time there last season, he racked up seven goals and nine assists in all competitions, showcasing form that many believe would earn him a place in Madrid’s starting lineup.
All signs suggest that Odegaard could be on his way back to Sociedad, but Arsenal appear determined to try to snatch the 22-year-old for himself.
