Juventus join Barcelona to sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay

Juventus are considering a candidacy in January to sign Lyon striker Memphis Depay ahead of longtime admirers Barcelona.

Depay, who will be without a contract at the end of the season, was high on Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman’s wishlist during the summer, but the Spanish side were unable to free up space in the team to land Depay before the window closes.

They are expected to renew their interest in January, but the problem is that Barcelona will not press any transfers until the presidential elections, which will not take place until January 24.

As Barcelona delay their pursuit of Depay, Tuttosport claim Juventus have entered the race for his signing and are looking to secure a cut-price deal before Barcelona come back to life later in the month.

Depay is reportedly offering his services down to the minute to ensure he finds a new club by the end of the season. Reports elsewhere have thrown Paris Saint-Germain into the mix, but it appears to be a two-horse race between Juventus and Barcelona.

Although Barcelona have long been the favorites, their inactivity could cause them to lose. Francesc Aguilar say Lyon are increasingly tired of Barcelona’s lack of response and are now looking to strike a deal elsewhere.

Calciomercato adds that Depay is open to the idea of moving to Juventus, where he would be happy to play more of a reserve role behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala.

It is suggested that Lyon want to sell Depay in January instead of allowing them to leave for free at the end of the season. However, Lyon are currently at the top of Ligue 1, so seeing them agree to change pockets to sell him now would be a bit of a surprise.

Depay played a big part in Lyon’s rise to the top of Ligue 1, accumulating eight goals and four assists in 17 appearances. He has been the team’s captain in each of his 13 starts and clearly remains a central part of the team.
