Tottenham returned to the top four with a 3-0 win over Leeds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Saturday’s kick-off.
Leeds had enjoyed the best of the opening rally but fell behind after 29 minutes when Ezgjan Alioski was penalized for a clumsy foul on Steven Bergwijn in the visitors’ area. Harry Kane was right from the penalty spot.
Spurs doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime, with Kane and Son Heung-min combining and the latter deftly stroking the house.
The hosts put the game beyond Leeds’ reach five minutes into the second half as Toby Alderweireld led Son’s corner ahead of Illan Meslier. Matt Doherty saw red for Spurs for a second bookable offense in stoppage time, but that was the only downside in a great afternoon for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Let’s move on to some player ratings.
Hugo Lloris (GK) – 6/10 – Had some effort from Bamford, but otherwise had very little to do.
Matt Doherty (RB) – 5/10 – Made a good last minute recovery tackle to stop Harrison in the first half. It looked like the Leeds winger was going to give him a rough afternoon in the early stages, but Doherty got the better of him. Was sent off in the second half timeout for a second bookable offense.
Toby Alderweireld (CB) – 7/10 – Caught Spurs ‘third by escaping Phillips’ attentions and sending a low header past Meslier.
Eric Dier (CB) – 7/10 – Strong defensively and calm in possession, knocking the ball out from behind on several occasions.
Ben Davies (LB) – 7/10 – Rarely marauded forward, but put on quite an impressive defensive display.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CDM) – 8/10 – Waltz into Leeds’ box and caused chaos with a dangerous low cross after the half hour. Won possession in Leeds halftime before feeding Kane in preparation for Spurs’ second. His reading of the game was integral to Spurs’ strong defensive display.
Harry Winks (CDM) – 7/10 – Really strong midfielder partnership with Hojbjerg, crucial for a strong defensive performance for Spurs. Clean and tidy in possession too.
Tanguy Ndombele (CM) – 6/10 – Almost caught Spurs’ third with a gently slapped effort that was well saved by Meslier. Has shown quality lightning with his hypnotic quick feet a few times.
Son Heung-min (LW) – 8/10 – Ran behind the Leeds back line all afternoon and was rewarded on the stroke of halftime, skillfully guiding Kane’s delivery past Meslier, before providing the cross for Spurs’ third.
Harry Kane (ST) – 8/10 – Sent a fiercely punched effort at close range a bit more in the first 20 minutes. Opened the scoring from place, sending his penalty straight down the middle, before giving Son a tee shot for Spurs’ second with a precise cross and low from depth.
Steven Bergwijn (RW) – 6/10 – He shot a wide effort in the first half but won the Spurs penalty by spinning Alioski and fouling the Leeds full-back. Blazed on a golden chance in the first half after a formidable turn in the box, and was prevented by a big save from Meslier in the second.
Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
Lucas Moura – 5/10
Carlos vinicius – N / A
Illan Meslier (GK) – 6/10 – Possession conceded with a loose pass in the Spurs’ penalty accumulation. Produced a selection of excellent second half saves to keep Ndombele, Bergwijn and Kane out, but were beaten by the header from Alderweireld.
Stuart Dallas (RB) – 6/10 – Well mopped up at the back several times as Spurs tried to get behind the Leeds backline. Carried the defense ball well and progressed adventurously.
Luke Ayling (CB) – 6/10 – Typical Leeds approach; courageous in possession, sometimes to great effect, while sometimes he was cowardly and led to his side giving up possession in dangerous areas. But he wasn’t afraid to try it over and over again.
Pascal Struijk (CB) – 6/10 – Got the ball out well from the back, but sometimes struggled to deal with Son and Kane’s movement and energy.
Ezgjan Alioski (LB) – 5/10 – Slammed an effort into the side net in the opening five minutes – one of the left-back’s many adventurous forays. Conceded a penalty for an awkward challenge on Bergwijn which Spurs took the lead.
Kalvin Phillips (DM) – 6/10 – Produced a big tackle to prevent Dier in the first half as the Spurs man lined up one in the Leeds area. Typically good in possession and strong defensively – but question marks over his scoring for Spurs’ third.
Mateusz Klich (CM) – 7/10 – Slipped Alioski during the opening rally with a neat pass from the edge of the zone. Klich’s bonding play was clever and complex, sending Rodrigo back into the first half with a nice flick.
Rodrigo (CM) – 5/10 – Failed to make clean contact with a close-range first-half effort after being played by Klich. Replaced just after the hour.
Rafina (RW) – 6/10 – Sent in a delicious first-half curling delivery, from which Bamford led a good chance.
Patrick Bamford (ST) – 6/10 – Unable to overcome a curling cross from Rafina, sending a header from close range in the first half and shooting a half chance straight at Lloris. Moments later, the Spurs doubled their lead. He looked neat and his linking play was particularly good in the first half.
Jack Harrisson (LW) – 5/10 – A well-hit effort from the edge of the box narrowly at the stroke of half-time. Replaced just before the hour.
Ian Poveda – 6/10
Jamie Shackleton – 5/10
Pablo Hernández – 6/10
