Milan returned to victory with a 2-1 win over Bologna on Saturday afternoon, temporarily extending their lead to five points at the top of Serie A.
I Rossoneri almost took the lead from the start when Theo Hernandez rocked the crossbar on a long-range free kick. The visitors managed to break the deadlock in the 26th minute, when Rafael Leao was brought back into the box, and although Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s penalty was saved by Lukasz Skorupski, Ante Rebic was there to score the rebound.
Milan then had the opportunity to double their lead, when Bologna defender Adama Soumaoro handled the ball in the box, and this time Franck Kessie was not wrong on 12 meters.
The visitors controlled the game, but inexplicably allowed Bologna to come back with a snort, when Andrea Pioli rummaged through the roof of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s net with 10 minutes left. Stefano Pioli’s men, however, hung on and won three essential points.
Let’s take a look at the player ratings from Saturday’s big game.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) – 8/10 – Made two huge, huge saves towards the end of the first half in Bologna, the second being particularly good. No chance to stop Pioli’s strike and produced an incredible save to prevent Bologna from leveling late.
Davide Calabria (RB) – 7/10 – Whipped a superb cross from the right in the first half, which deserved a bet from his teammates. Could have doubled the lead with a diving header.
Fikayo Tomori (CB) – 8/10 – An extremely composed display from the lender. Wonderfully calm in possession, spotting midfielders in space and setting visitors in motion. Provided some key tackles and made a strong league debut.
Alessio Romagnoli (CB) – 7/10 – Taken out of position and left his fellow defenders horribly exposed at the end of the first half, but other than that the captain led with authority for the league leaders.
Théo Hernandez (LB) – 6/10 – Hit the crossbar with a deep free kick, which was probably a cross. Took a risk in possession and almost let Orsolini equalize in the first half, but the Italian shot wide. Offered Bologna a lifeline by giving them the ball for Pioli’s effort.
Franck Kessie (CM) – 8/10 – Protected all four backs with typical tenacity, sitting deep and biting into tackles when needed. Coolly scored his penalty in the middle, showing Ibra how it’s done.
Sandro Tonali (CM) – 6/10 – A better display of the youngster but still not of the player Milan thought they signed. Impossible to take the game by the skin of the neck.
Rafael Leao (AM) – 8/10 – Played well as number 10, using his lightning dribble to get Milan in motion. Chose Ibrahimovic with some nice threaded balls. Won the penalty early on to shoot I Rossoneri.
Alexis Saelemaekers (RW) – 7/10 – Provided so much defensive cover and sacrificed much of his attacking threat to undo Bologna’s advances. A selfless and engaged display of the young star.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (ST) – 6/10 – Denied twice in seconds by an incredible double save from Skorupski. Lack another penalty and was lucky that Rebic was the fastest on the second ball.
Ante Rebic (LW) – 8/10 – Dug Ibrahimovic out of a hole hitting home the rebound of the Swede’s failed kick. Picked up a yellow card for a late challenge in the second half.
Ismael Bennacer (CM) – 6/10
Rade Krunic (CM) – 6/10
Mario Mandzukic (LW) – 6/10
