Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is closing in on a move to Schalke which would likely see Ozan Kabak leave to join Liverpool.
Mustafi has struggled for playing time this season, lowering the pecking order under manager Mikel Arteta, and received the perfect path to leave the Emirates thanks to Liverpool’s interest in 20-year-old Kabak.
The Germany international, who hasn’t played for Arsenal since Boxing Day, is set to move to the Bundesliga, ending a four-and-a-half-year stint in north London, though sources vary on potential fees. Football London says his contract will be terminated before the move is sealed, while ESPN’s James Olley Arsenal claims want a sum this window.
Mustafi’s departure would mark another outing this month for Arsenal. Former outcasts Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have left for good in recent weeks, while Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba have been sent on loan. Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Reiss Nelson are among the youngsters who could still leave on loan before the deadline.
Mustafi joined Arsenal in 2016 for a fee of around £ 35million, but never convinced club fans that he was a long-term solution to their problems in central defense, mainly due to his inclination for disastrous mistakes.
He made 31 league appearances in 2018/19, but his numbers declined in the next two campaigns.
Regarding Liverpool, 90 mins reported on Monday that the club had started negotiations on a loan deal for Turkish defender Kabak.
Negotiations are now at a more advanced stage, according to Athletic. The report differs depending on whether it will have a mandatory or optional purchase clause, with Athletic opting for the former and Paul Joyce of The Times citing the latter. The loan costs are said to be around £ 2million.
Liverpool have seen Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip hit with injury this season, leaving Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams to replace at the back.
A deal for Preston center-back Ben Davies is also expected to be announced on deadline day after the Anfield club reached a deal worth around £ 2million for the 25-year-old. years.
