Thiago Silva could be punished for giving a jersey to a construction worker

Chelsea star Thiago Silva could face Premier League punishment for breaking coronavirus protocol, after giving his match-worn shirt to a Craven Cottage construction worker.

The Premier League has issued strict new guidelines for footballers and staff to follow amid the latest increase in cases, which included a ban on trading or giving away worn shirts.

Silva ignored those warnings on Saturday afternoon when he had just beaten Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage he spotted a construction worker in the stands and threw his jersey at the member of the public.

And the 36-year-old could be reprimanded for his actions, as senior England officials seek to crack down on those who do not follow their new set of rules, in a bid to slow the spread of the virus.

Silva is not the first man to do this, however. Fellow Brazilian Richarlison also threw his shirt at a Craven Cottage worker when Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton made the trip to London, but he escaped penalties for his misjudged act of kindness.

The Premier League could take stronger action against Silva, however, given that we have seen a number of high-profile matches postponed due to coronavirus outbreaks among teams across the country.

Chelsea will be left sweating for fear of losing Silva due to a ban for the upcoming series of matches, as they aim to climb the standings and return to the Champions League race. The Blues will face Leicester City in the next league meeting, before welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers in what will be a tricky competition.

And doing it without Silva would be a big blow for Frank Lampard. The experienced defender has played regularly for Chelsea this season, and he even took on the role of captain when Cesar Azpilicueta failed to start.

He has made 13 appearances for the Blues this season, scoring two goals.
